Majjiga Charu Recipe: A Refreshing and Tangy Buttermilk Rasam Delight

Majjiga Charu, also known as Buttermilk Rasam, is a popular South Indian dish that is light, tangy, and refreshing. It is made with buttermilk, spices, and herbs, and is typically served as a part of a traditional meal or enjoyed as a standalone soup. Here’s a simple recipe to prepare Majjiga Charu:

Ingredients:

  • – 2 cups of thick buttermilk
  • – 1 cup of water
  • – 1 teaspoon of oil
  • – 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • – 1/2 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • – 1/4 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds
  • – 1-2 dried red chilies
  • – 8-10 curry leaves
  • – 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • – 1/2 teaspoon of ginger, grated
  • – 1/2 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
  • – Coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. 1.In a mixing bowl, whisk the buttermilk until it becomes smooth. Add water to adjust the consistency according to your preference. Set it aside.
  2. 2.Heat oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds until the spices release their aroma.
  3. 3.Reduce the heat to low and add turmeric powder and grated ginger. Stir well for a few seconds to infuse the flavors into the oil.
  4. 4.Turn off the heat and allow the spice mixture to cool down for a minute or two.
  5. 5.Gradually pour the spice mixture into the buttermilk while continuously whisking it. This will ensure that the spices are evenly distributed.
  6. 6.Add salt to taste and mix well.
  7. 7.Pour the Majjiga Charu into a serving bowl.
  8. 8.Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  9. 9.Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
